Small in size but big in possibility is one way to describe Gunnison, Utah. The area boasts milder winters, a bolstering economy and plenty of shopping and dining options. The town’s motto is “Progress with Purpose.”
History
The town was established in 1859 by the Mormon Pioneers, and it was named in honor of Captain John W. Gunnison who had, amongst other things, surveyed for the Transcontinental Railroad. Brigham Young was the one who gave the town its name. Sites within the area were originally named Chalk Hill Point and Hog’s Wallow.
